Ballebe
Alpha Ousmane Sankaré, also known asHama or Pedro, is a legend. He has anchored the bands of many great artists of Mali: Ali Farka Toure, Afel Bocoum, le Troupe Regionale de Niafunké, l’Orchestre de Gao, Songhoy Allstars, and Mamadou Kelly. He can be heard on many of the seminal recordings of the music of Mali. He is the master of contemporary calabash percussion. His influence is unchallenged, as composer, arranger and instrumentalist. Unbelievably, Ballébé is his first album in his own name!
Hama Sankare - BALLEBE
The album title means “Calling all Africans” and as the opening song says: “everybody groove”.
A tour de force by Malian master musician Hama Sankare. A musical adventurer, Hama was always reaching for new excitement and new music. This album, astoundingly his first after over 40 years in the business, combines the electric guitar of Oumar Konate, the additional production and remixes by Los Angeles based David Harrow, the pedal steel of grammy-winner Cindy Cashdollar, the bass of Sekou Toure and drummer Mahalmadane Traore with traditional masters Yoro Cisse on djourkel, Bouba Cissao on njarka and Sankare’s own seminal calabash for what can only be described as reaching into the past and the future simultaneously. Hama even adds hiphop production techniques on mixes by David Harrow from Los Angeles. Hama was always searching, always exploring, using his vast repertoire as composer and writer to expand into new territory.
